Hi Blog. Not specifically Japan-related, but close to my heart: Historical article from the International Herald Tribune/Asahi (Nov 23-24, 2002) entitled “Hazards of Divorce: Unfamiliar laws can make expats especially vulnerable.”

Since I went through a particularly painful one myself, this info may be of help to others. Referential links specifically regarding divorce in Japan at

    1. regular reader Says:

      Debito,

On a marginally related note, what nationality is U.S. born singer Utada Hikaru? Given that she recently got divorced, unless she chose Japanese nationality before turning 21, her status in Japan would be limited to that of a permanent resident or dependent visa. Any thoughts on this? I haven’t had much luck searching the internet on this topic.

–SHE’S JAPANESE, NO PROBLEM. SHE’S BORN TO JAPANESE PARENTS BUT IN THE US, SHE HAD BOTH BY BLOOD AND BIRTHPLACE. AS YOU MENTIONED, SHE HAD TO CHOOSE WHEN SHE BECAME AN ADULT, AND PROBABLY CHOSE JAPANESE (AND IF SHE WANTED TO KEEP HER AMERICAN, CAN QUIETLY KEEP RENEWING HER US PASSPORT). LOTS OF MULTINATIONAL J CHILDREN DO THIS, SO SHE WOULD NOT BE OUT OF THE ORDINARY. I SUSPECT THAT’S WHAT’S HAPPENING. THANKS FOR YOUR QUESTION. DEBITO AT CORNELL UNIVERSITY
