ADVANCE PRAISE FOR NOVEL “IN APPROPRIATE”

  • “ARUDOU Debito’s depiction of how quickly life gets turned upside down by the crazy family rules in Japan will do more than just grab your attention.  It will make you cry at the strange and deplorable tale of love lost in Japan. IN APPROPRIATE sheds necessary light on the twisted norms and laws in Japan that not only allow, but also encourage parents to abduct their children from one another.  A must-read primer on the issue.” — Eric Kalmus, Children’s Rights Network Japan (www.crnjapan.net), and Left-Behind Parent.
  • “ARUDOU Debito, or David Aldwinckle as I know him, has written an unbelievable novel called IN APPROPRIATE. I say ‘unbelievable’ because if you haven’t experienced a divorce in Japan, you would simply not believe this sort of thing could happen.  Drawing on true stories, Debito has managed to weave together a heartbreaking tale around the injustice that sadly exists in modern Japan.  Perhaps this will be a legacy for those of us who lived through this experience, and for our children who suffered
    under this system.”
    John Evans, Left-Behind Parent

  • Looks to be an interesting read. Being that this is a work of fiction are there some real world parallels that we can takeaway from this? i.e something that I need to be on the lookout for in my own current (international) marriage??

    — It’s a work of fiction, as you say, but it’s not meant to be a handbook for marriage. It’s a good story about an international relationship gone bad. I’ve based some of the details on my own experience with divorce and Parental Alienation Syndrome. Please get a copy and see for yourself whether it offers life lessons.

  • Do you have any plans to translate this into Japanese? It would be interesting to see how Japanese readers would react to it.

    — No plans as yet.

  • Debito,

I often come to this website and I really want to thank you for your efforts ! I was going to buy the book until I realized it was a work of fiction and only 149 pages.
Im sorry but I would prefer to read a non-fiction book about the subject especially written by you.

    — Sorry. I hope you change your mind. I think you might get a lot out of it.

  • Is it not available to buy in Japan?

Why is it not on Amazon.co.jp too?

    — It’s printed in the US. Just a matter of postage to Japan, or anywhere. Where it is sold online is not my decision, sorry. It would still cost postage if was sold on co.jp too.

  • Hi. Why did you mix several cases to make a story? Does not that reduce its sense of reality?

    — Using an amalgam of several cases I think increases the sense of reality, as it allows readers to triangulate. Each case is very, very different. Read the book and decide for yourself. Others with this experience have read it, and they have told me how true the story rings.

  • Congrats on getting it out there, but man…you should have had someone else take a picture of you. It looks so obvious it is a “self-portrait.”
Sorry, but that makes it look a bit unprofessional. I still think I might go out and get it.

    Gomen ne.

    — I know people will judge a book by it’s cover, but my goodness, it’s pretty tough to please everyone with an author photo (given what I have to work with 😉 ). I hope you can get beyond my ugly mug and get a copy!

Debito, I just have one question. Is this the book you were spending time
writing, or is that another one which will be coming out later? Thanks!

P.S. Glad to see you’re OK!

    — Thanks. This is the book I was spending time writing. Consider getting a copy!

  • I just finished reading your book last night Debito.
It shocked me to be honest as it opened my eyes to what actually happened to me when I was married and living in Japan. How I was seen as the one who worked, how the house was my wifes and work was mine. How her parents worked on my children from the day they were born, teaching them how great Japan was today, and how she suffered so much during WW2.
I am convinced my wifes mother played a pivotal role in taking my children from their dad 3 years ago.
I had a sick feeling from early on that one day they would take my children….In the end they did.
Anyway, thanks for putting the story out there….
    David from Ireland

    — Thanks David. Please put up a testimonial on the publisher’s site?
