Thanks for your support!<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Hi Blog.\u00a0 Continuing with the hate speech theme (and the perpetrators of it in Japan, e.g., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.debito.org\/?s=Zaitokukai\">Zaitokukai<\/a>), here is an editorial from the Asahi decrying that support of this group (or at least the unwillingness to disavow or take measures against their spreading public hatred of minorities) appears to reside in the highest levels of government.\u00a0 As the person being cited, Yamatani Eriko, is the nation&#8217;s top cop in the current PM Abe Cabinet, this information bodes ill for any legal measures or remedies against hate speech in Japan, something <a href=\"https:\/\/www.debito.org\/?p=12598\">the UN recently advised Japan to adopt<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>BTW, this is the same Yamatani Eriko who spoke out against a memorial against Japan&#8217;s wartime sexual slavery in Palisades Park, New Jersey (not <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/la-me-comfort-women-20140812-story.html\">the Glendale, California monument<\/a>), including the following &#8220;explanation&#8221; in two languages on her blog of May 6, 2012 (courtesy of MS), with the requisite denialism:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.yamatani-eriko.com\/blog\/inf\/inf.cgi?cm=1&amp;mode=detail&amp;year=2012&amp;no=741\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.yamatani-eriko.com\/<wbr><\/wbr>blog\/inf\/inf.cgi?cm=1&amp;mode=<wbr><\/wbr>detail&amp;year=2012&amp;no=741<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Conclusion: \u00a0<strong><em>&#8220;Moreover, it cannot be tolerated that Japanese children are bullied and felt sorrowful due to a lie that Japan conducted the abduction of 200,000 girls which is not true at all, and that the lie has been spread throughout the world.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u4e8b\u5b9f\u3067\u306a\u3044\u300c20\u4e07\u4eba\u5c11\u5973\u62c9\u81f4\u300d\u3084\u300c\u6027\u5974\u96b7\u300d<wbr><\/wbr>\u3092\u65e5\u672c\u304c\u3057\u305f\u3053\u3068\u3068\u3055\u308c\u3001\u4e16\u754c\u306b\u5618\u304c\u5e83\u3052\u3089\u308c\u3001<wbr><\/wbr>\u65e5\u672c\u306e\u5b50\u4f9b\u305f\u3061\u304c\u3044\u3058\u3081\u3089\u308c\u3001<wbr><\/wbr>\u60b2\u3057\u3044\u601d\u3044\u3092\u3059\u308b\u3053\u3068\u306f\u8a31\u3055\u308c\u308b\u3053\u3068\u3067\u306f\u306a\u3044\u3002\u300f<\/p>\n<p>These are the people who currently lead Japan.\u00a0 Is there any more doubt about the claim of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.debito.org\/?p=11408\">Japan&#8217;s right-wing swing<\/a>?\u00a0 Dr. ARUDOU, Debito<\/p>\n<p>\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/<\/p>\n<p><strong>EDITORIAL: Abe and his picks must clarify stance on Zaitokukai, racism<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> The Asahi Shinbun, October 01, 2014, Courtesy of MS<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/ajw.asahi.com\/article\/views\/editorial\/AJ201410010040\">http:\/\/ajw.asahi.com\/article\/views\/editorial\/AJ201410010040<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Eriko Yamatani, chairwoman of the National Public Safety Commission, should get it into her head that saying she \u201cdid not know\u201d just doesn\u2019t cut it.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>It came to light in September that a photograph taken in 2009 shows her with a senior member of a group called Zainichi Tokken wo Yurusanai Shimin no Kai, known more commonly as Zaitokukai, which objects to what it calls \u201cprivileges\u201d given to ethnic Koreans in Japan.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Yamatani insisted she did not know the man was a Zaitokukai member. Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroshige Seko said this was a nonissue.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>But when Yamatani spoke at the Foreign Correspondents\u2019 Club of Japan on Sept. 25 on the subject of Japanese abducted by North Korean agents, the questions from the floor were almost entirely about her relationship with Zaitokukai.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dQDPqsMCqu8\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fccj.or.jp\/news-and-views\/club-news-multimedia\/583-state-minister-eriko-yamatani-north-korean-abductions-hate-speech-and-the-zaitoku-kai.html\">http:\/\/www.fccj.or.jp\/news-and-views\/club-news-multimedia\/583-state-minister-eriko-yamatani-north-korean-abductions-hate-speech-and-the-zaitoku-kai.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Asked if she was opposed to the group\u2019s policy, Yamatani replied, \u201cGenerally speaking, it is not appropriate for me to comment on various organizations.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Further pressed to define what Zaitokukai refers to as \u201cprivileges\u201d and whether she herself thinks that such privileges exist, Yamatani said, \u201cThese are not questions for me to answer.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The National Public Safety Commission is the highest administrative organ of Japan\u2019s law enforcement community. The fact that its chief is suspected of consorting with Zaitokukai, which is known for its strident \u201chate speech\u201d and anti-Korea street demonstrations, is shameful in itself. Yet, instead of firmly expressing her disapproval of racism in any form, Yamatani typically characterized Japan platitudinously as \u201ca country where harmony is valued and every person\u2019s rights have always been respected.\u201d She went on to say it is the common belief that \u201c(hate speech) is bad indeed, and it disturbs me deeply.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>A trite comment such as this did absolutely nothing to clear the clouds of suspicion hanging over her.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>In fact, it may well have aroused further suspicion that she tacitly approves Zaitokukai\u2019s actions.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Overseas media have covered not only Yamatani\u2019s case but also reported that Internal Affairs and Communications Minister Sanae Takaichi and ruling Liberal Democratic Party policy chief Tomomi Inada had their photos taken in 2011 with the head of an organization which seems to support the thinking of the Nazis.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The prevalent view abroad now is that this is indicative of the right-wing nature of the Shinzo Abe administration, not just a matter of personal idiosyncrasies of certain Cabinet members.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Democratic Party of Japan leader Banri Kaieda brought up Yamatani\u2019s case during the Sept. 30 questioning session in the Diet and demanded of Prime Minister Abe, \u201cLest we invite unwanted suspicions by the international community, please demonstrate your firm resolve to never condone racism or distorted nationalism.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>But all Abe said was: \u201cIt is extremely regrettable that some people\u2019s words and actions indicate their attempt to exclude certain countries and races. This must not happen.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Suspicions will only deepen unless something is done about the situation.
