Debito.org Reader Jenifer (a pseudonym) sends evidence that the ICI Hotel Kanda will not only be demanding ID from all of its &#8220;foreign guests&#8221; (no doubt, as typically enforced, as a precondition for stay), but also <a href=\"http:\/\/debito.org\/whattodoif.html#passportnumber\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unlawfully requiring even the NJ residents<\/a> (who have addresses in Japan) display their ID (something not required by law of Japanese guests). The status of &#8220;foreign guest&#8221; will no doubt be determined on sight or by recorded name, so cue the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.debito.org\/?s=%22racial+profiling%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">racial profiling<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>(And if you want to carry a file substantiating that you don&#8217;t have to show any ID as a resident of Japan, download it from here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.debito.org\/newhotelpassportlaw.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.debito.org\/newhotelpassportlaw.jpg<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The justification? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.debito.org\/?p=13930\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Once again<\/a>, the Japanese Police (in this case the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.debito.org\/?s=Tokyo+Metropolitan+Police+hotel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tokyo Metropolitan Police<\/a>) are stretching the law and demanding hotels act as their agents to check all &#8220;foreign ID&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/debito.org\/whattodoif.html#passportnumber\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">something only people with the proper ministerial credentials can do<\/a>). \u00a0And as the ICI Hotel Kanda explicitly says in the Update below,<a href=\"http:\/\/debito.org\/whattodoif.html#refusedhotel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> they will refuse accommodation if that ID is not displayed, in direct violation of the laws governing hotel management<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The ICI Hotel Kanda also cites &#8220;safety for our guests and other residents in Japan&#8221;. \u00a0No doubt the Rugby World Cup will be used as a pretext, even though the reservation is for November. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.debito.org\/worldcup2002.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Once again<\/a>, bring in an international event, and use it as a pretext to further alienate Japan&#8217;s resident non-citizens and international citizens. The only people who have a right to ask for a residency card is the Japanese police and immigration.
