COMMENT<\/strong>: \u00a0I’ve said this many times before<\/a>, but associating contagion with nationality is unscientific. \u00a0Again, because a) there are Non-Japanese residents who live in Japan the same as Japanese, exposed to the same risks of contagion as Japanese, b) there are few foreigners in Japan from overseas at the moment due to the mostly-closed border controls<\/a>, and c) chances are that foreigners who do come in from overseas are better vetted (not to mention more likely vaccinated due to better jab regimes overseas) than Japanese.<\/p>\n

So there is no scientific reason to put up a rule like this. \u00a0There is, however, plenty of reason if you’re a xenophobe, like so many people who reflexively put up “Japanese Only” signs<\/a> are, and will use any excuse<\/a> (including foreign “health scares” from SARS and AIDS<\/a>) to justify, even if they are a health care provider<\/a>. \u00a0These are the people<\/a> we will continue to\u00a0expose<\/a> for the record<\/a> on Debito.org. \u00a0Adding to the pile<\/a>. \u00a0Debito Arudou, Ph.D.<\/p>\n

UPDATE AUG 27, 2021: \u00a0The campsite has changed their rules. \u00a0<\/em><\/strong>As MM reported on FB, after telephoning them (anonymized):<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

MM<\/strong>: \u00a0Well, I did call them now and asked them if I can use the camp site […]<\/em><\/p>\n

They answered me that the biggest reason was that their terms & co is only in Japanese, and there are no English speaking staffs so they were afraid that they cannot communicate with the customers and ask them to follow the rules. They wrote “because of COVID” because they couldn’t explain it well in English on their website, and thought that people would understand if they wrote so.<\/em><\/p>\n

So, in my case they said I could make a reservation because I have no problem communicating in Japanese.<\/em>
\nIt does say \u96fb\u8a71\u3067\u8981\u76f8\u8ac7, so it seems that they aren’t shutting down all foreigners and there are acceptable cases.<\/em><\/p>\n

Of course, that’s not what Karst’s website said, excluding all foreigners by resorting to the racist trope that foreigners have disease. \u00a0So this morning, they amended it to<\/strong><\/em> “we can take a reservation for someone who can understand Japanese properly Because you need to understand our rules correctly.”<\/p>\n

Because of course, campsites are fraught with danger, and one language miscommunication and all goes to hell. \u00a0After all, foreigners don’t know how to camp if they can’t “understand Japanese properly”. And that’s after they decided in good faith just to blame Covid. \u00a0— Debito<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
