\u00a0I didn&#8217;t expect a far-right troll like Takaichi Sanae to become the LDP&#8217;s next party leader and probable PM. \u00a0Now that she is, I have to follow up with a new assessment, which is that she is bad news for Japan&#8217;s diversity and democracy itself.<\/p>\n<p>Again, intellectual honesty requires candor and a change of mind when necessary. \u00a0It&#8217;s necessary now. PROJECTIONS<\/h3>\n<h3><em>The recent election of Sanae Takaichi as leader of the LDP probably means Japan\u2019s first woman PM.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But this a huge step back for Japan\u2019s democracy and diversity.<\/em><\/h3>\n<h4><em>By Debito Arudou.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> \u00a0<\/span>Shingetsu News Agency, Visible Minorities Column 70, something I wrote earlier.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>In my previous column, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.debito.org\/?p=17596\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Japan\u2019s Rightward Swing is Overblown<\/a>\u201d (SNA, August 26, 2025), I argued that an outsider \u201cJapan First\u201d party (Sanseito) was getting a lot of media attention for its blatant xenophobia posing as public policy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But I argued the hype about their showing in the August Upper House Elections was undue because Sanseito remained structurally far from power.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>My underlying argument was, \u201cDon\u2019t feed the trolls.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Sanseito thrives on this kind of attention.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>After all, no real political transition had taken place.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Japan\u2019s Liberal Democratic Party, the most successful political party in history at staying in power and destroying rival parties, was still in power with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba in place.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Moreover, the LDP over decades had been doing what Sanseito was noisily advocating all along, only quieter.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Beyond the hype, Sanseito was saying nothing new.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Alas, my column has not aged well.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>A MONTH IS A LONG TIME IN POLITICS<\/h4>\n<p><strong><em>Ishiba has since resigned his post and the LDP has had new elections for party leader.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Stump speeches between successor candidates fell for the anti-foreigner hype and launched a foreigner-bashing olympics.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Eventually the extremist candidate won, despite her weird past policy positions, overtly racist statements, and lying about, of all things, foreigners assaulting deer in a park.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Say hello to Sanae Takaichi, the LDP\u2019s new leader and likely Japan\u2019s first female PM. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>But don\u2019t celebrate Japan finally choosing a female.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In Japan\u2019s long history of women vying for the PM post \u2014 from opposition party leader but panderer to the LDP Takako Doi, to outspoken reformer but alleged foreigner Renho \u2014 Takaichi has prevailed.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The problem is, her world view has been warped by Japan\u2019s systemic sexism, and her policies ironically will only make things worse for her ilk.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Consider the Japanese metaphor (from the opening frame of \u201cBarefoot Gen\u201d) of how if wheat gets trampled down constantly, it eventually shoots back up with even stronger roots.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In a society where women of talent have to work twice as hard to get half of what men do, women like Takaichi emerge far more resilient and studious of the rules of engagement in male-dominated societies. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>That\u2019s why Takaichi is particularly scary.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Not only because she clearly can play the game, but also because, in her thirst for power, she learned the authoritarian playbook better than most.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>DISCRIMINATION CREATES MONSTERS<\/h4>\n<p><strong><em>Jake Adelstein\u2019s recent substack polemic, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/tokyopaladin.substack.com\/p\/the-rise-of-japans-female-trump-why\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Rise of Japan\u2019s Female Trump<\/a>,\u201d has the receipts.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Please read it for yourself, but let me crib: <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The new rules of engagement were created by the far-right Brahmin Shinzo Abe before he was assassinated.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Famously heralded as \u201cTrump before Trump,\u201d PM Abe captured state broadcaster NHK and cowed unfavorable media with threats of lawsuits and denied access (even getting columnists critical of Japan like me fired from the Japan Times).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He began remilitarizing Japan to aggravate the balance of power in East Asia.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He launched domestic economic policies that increased social inequality and only heightened people\u2019s politics of grievance.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He undermined Japan\u2019s pacifist Constitution and even the concept of human rights itself.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And he sucked up to and enabled Trump as an unconditional ally on the international stage.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Most importantly, as far as this column space goes, Abe parlayed a fear of outsiders (particularly Chinese) into policy drives while ironically opening Japan up to their tourists, which in turn fanned a xenophobia he found useful.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>His ultimate goal was to return to an era when elites (like his family) ran the place like a divine, racially superior nation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He succeeded well enough to inspire a future generation of proteges.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Hence Takaichi is Abe Redux, except as a commoner with Imposter Syndrome.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>She\u2019s more vocal about Abe\u2019s worst ideas in order to seek the approval of the Nippon Kaigi clique.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>On the kooky side, she has claimed divine inspiration for her political aspirations and sees Japanese as genetically superior life forms.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>She has also openly advocated learning from Hitler (yes, by name) about how to win elections and then overturn democratic institutions through \u201cemergency measures\u201d against newfound enemies.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In other words, find your monsters and then go do something monstrous. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>She\u2019s already found boogeymen in the oddest corners \u2014 for example, foreign deer kickers in Nara, or foreigners escaping criminal charges due to a lack of police interpreters \u2014 stories that turned out to be as fictitious as Trump\u2019s \u201cthey\u2019re eating the cats, they\u2019re eating the dogs\u201d lie. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Yet these easily certifiable lies didn\u2019t disqualify him, or her.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In the old days, Prime Ministers got in international trouble for saying things like \u201cblacks, Puerto Ricans, and Mexicans make the average IQ score in America exceedingly low\u201d (Yasuhiro Nakasone).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Not anymore, and not just because of Trump.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In an information economy where fear and rumor spread far faster than the fact-checker, stoking xenophobia remains an effective strategy. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>And with the number of foreign tourists and residents at record levels, we get a perpetual positive feedback loop \u2014 especially if you don\u2019t distinguish between tourist and resident.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Just focus on any real or perceived slight from by a Visible Minority in your neighborhood or local convenience store, claim they\u2019re part of an invading horde here to destabilize our society, and you can simultaneously claim victim and savior status for yourself. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>What\u2019s next?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Emergency edicts to save Japan from being undermined by rapacious outsiders?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As I mentioned earlier, this has been a mantra for Japan\u2019s far-right for decades, only quieter.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This time we have loud and clear policy drives not only to curtail tourism, but also to end immigration (such as it is?) and international exchange programs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s just for starters.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Trickle-down effects are stories about people being targeted on the street and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/sep\/29\/kurdish-migrants-japan-kurds-immigration\">afraid to go outside<\/a> for fear of actual violence from angry strangers.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>But these xenophobic slogans aren\u2019t simply to garner votes in the short term.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They are part of a fascist playbook they know will work in the long term, because they have in other countries.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The politics of grievance here have firm and specific targets.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>But back to Takaichi in particular.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Having clawed her way to the top and bested all her detractors, she will probably be as ruthless towards her targets as Japanese society has been towards her.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>She\u2019s not going to empathize with fellow women and minorities and try to make things better for them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>She will lord it over them with particular vim as a victorious survivor. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>That\u2019s why I\u2019m going to have to recant my previous column.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I was probably blinded by how comparatively bad it\u2019s getting in America (my current focus of teaching) and how fast it\u2019s going down the authoritarian slope.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I guess I saw Japan as a milder example that hadn\u2019t tipped yet.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>No longer.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Of course, if I try hard enough, I can come up with \u201ccalm-down caveats\u201d like last column.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>For example, Takaichi\u2019s election as LDP leader was not at all a slam-dunk; she was nowhere near a majority in the first round of party ballots, and she only narrowly beat off her rival in a second runoff election.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And as of this writing, she\u2019s still not PM, because other members of the ruling coalition haven\u2019t voted her in yet.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s still unclear whether the more moderate alliance party Komeito will stomach her.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>But either way, with the power she now has over the LDP, I can very easily see Takaichi making a new political alliance with Sanseito and taking things down an even darker path. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>POLI SCI AS AN INEXACT SCIENCE<\/h4>\n<p><strong><em>This is one of the issues Political Scientists have with parliamentary systems like Japan\u2019s.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A country\u2019s leader is not voted in by the population in general (like presidents), but rather by a local constituency, and the rest of the party later remotely chooses their leader who goes on to be PM.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Fringe candidates and firebrands do sometimes go all the way to Wembley.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s what happened with Takaichi.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>And this firebrand will just keep pointing to any handy foreigner infraction (ignoring the iconoclastic Japanese doing the same), loudly foreigner-bash to drown out any economic bad news, and channel the results into policies to enforce conformity and tamp down on dissent.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Put \u201cJapan First\u201d to \u201csave the country\u201d from conditions that the LDP, the party in charge for most of Japan\u2019s Postwar Era, are in fact responsible for.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The templates are all there \u2014 even something as extreme as sealing Japan off from foreign entry (as the government did during Covid) has precedent!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>And if she fails?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>She won\u2019t disappear.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Ruthless politicians clawing their way to power will do anything to preserve it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>No doubt she\u2019ll dedicate the rest of her life to making things as miserable as possible for foreigners and \u201canti-Japanese\u201d minority voices.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s now her brand.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And there are other proteges to take up the mantle.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>So how much damage to Japan\u2019s democracy can Takaichi do?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Quite a lot if she adopts that well-tested modern authoritarian playbook.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yes, parliamentary governments can collapse with a single scandal, and Takaichi may just be a flash in the pan.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But at this point, my making an assessment like this feels Pollyannish. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Japan has always been susceptible to the fear of foreigners coming in and destroying its essence.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s the very reason Japan became a country in the first place!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Last word:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Let me say oops.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A month in politics is a long time and Political Science is an inexact science.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In the spirit of intellectual honesty and candor, I have no problem changing my mind once new data comes in.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Takaichi\u2019s election changes my assessments significantly.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Something wicked for the world\u2019s democracies still this way comes.<span
