We have a special reason to send this special mailing about Sunday\u2019s
\naction against the legal amendments currently proposed \u2013 the reason is
\nthat they will affect YOU.
\nAs the details become clearer, more and more people, both Japanese and
\nnon-Japanese, are voicing opposition and organizing against the
\nproposals. We have a rare chance to influence government policy in the
\nfew weeks ahead. Please support us:

\n“convenient” and “protected” for NJ residents: New Zairyuu Kaado with
\nbiometric data stored on IC Chips.
\nConvenient? Yeah, for the police, not NJ. I make the case that, if
\nthe legislation is passed, policing and punishments will only get
\nstricter, and the chipped cards will act as “bugs” encouraging further
\npolice checkpoints and racial profiling\u2026

\nRally Against Reforms to the Immigration Law<\/p>\n

The “NGO Committee against the Introduction of the ‘Zai-ryu’ Residence
\nCard” calls on people living in Japan, both citizens and foreign
\nresidents, to join together to oppose discriminatory reforms to
\nimmigration law.<\/p>\n

The assembly will include an overview of the proposed reforms to the
\nImmigration Law, and speeches by the affected parties. Participants
\nare encouraged to bring their own banners and signs to carry in the
\ndemonstration.<\/p>\n

BACKGROUND
\nA new registration card with IC chip will replace the current foreign
\nresident registration card.
\nSome people are saying that the proposed new \u201cgaijin card\u201d system is
\njust the same as the old system, but administered centrally. If only
\nit was that simple\u2026<\/p>\n

Under the new system, the Immigration Bureau will collect and control
\npersonal information on foreign residents. A new foreign resident
\nregistration card with an IC chip will be issued to replace the
\ncurrent registration card.
\nThe new registration card must be carried at all times\u2026anyone not
\ncarrying their card can be detained.
\nThe new registration card must be up-to-date\u2026if it isn\u2019t you can be
\nfined up to 200,000 yen, and in some cases have your visa revoked!
\nThe kind of IC chip to be used on the card can be read remotely \u2013
\nmeaning police can scan a crowd or line of people and snatch those
\napparently not carrying one. This kind of IC chip is also readable by
\ncriminals \u2013 making you more likely to be a victim of identity theft.
\nDocumented foreigners will be subject to heightened surveillance,
\nwhile undocumented foreign residents will “disappear” from the record
\nand be excluded from social services entirely.<\/p>\n

\ndiscriminate!<\/p>\n
