Hi Blog. Just a quick word to let you know that my next Japan Times JUST BE CAUSE column is coming out on Tuesday, December 1, 2009 (Wednesday in the provinces).

Topic: 1300 words on what PM Hatoyama and the DPJ should be doing to make life easier for everyone in Japan, regardless of nationality, by devising immigration policies that focus more on assimilation, less on policing, for a change. Have a read! Debito in Sapporo

  • maguro in meguro says:

All resident NJ should naturalize and vote for Debito for president… after making Japan a republic. (Only half kidding.)

  • Maguro in Meguro: You think you’re kidding, but that’s the exact kind of things the opposers of NJ rights say: they will use their “group vote” and elect some apologist in a remote part of Japan, who will then sacrifice that entire region to a foreign state such as Korea.

Ridiculous as it sounds, some people are dead serious about this.

  • Where can I find out about any weird visa fee changes? I work in the US but with Japanese clients, and my client says his best non-Japanese friend in Japan has just been hit with a ¥600000 fee for renewing his visa on a professor visa, and is leaving Japan because his university won’t sponsor it. (The friend doesn’t have a PhD and is probably not making a very high salary, so that’s not surprising.) Just wondering where I can find out whether this is a fluke or some bizarre new policy.
